The Arch

ABOUT

At alt_, we believe that art has the power to change the narrative and promote representation for underrepresented communities. Through our work as an artist-led, community-driven organization, we recognize the importance of archives in preserving the stories and experiences of our communities.

Archives are a vital tool for understanding our past, shaping our present, and imagining our future. They allow us to learn about the accomplishments of Black and Brown leaders, artists, and activists who have shaped our world. They also provide us with insights into the social, political, and economic systems that have oppressed us, and how we have resisted and fought back against those systems.

Through the arts, we can use archives to promote representation and challenge dominant narratives that exclude or marginalize underrepresented communities. By creating and sharing art that reflects our experiences, we can tell our own stories and celebrate our own achievements. This is especially important for Black and Brown artists, who have often been excluded from traditional art spaces and have had limited access to resources and opportunities.

Art also has the power to inspire and challenge us. It can open our eyes to new possibilities, and help us imagine a more just and equitable society. By creating art that reflects our communities, we can inspire others to see the world in new and different ways.

Moreover, art can help us reclaim our narratives and challenge dominant narratives perpetuating stereotypes and misinformation about our communities. By creating art that reflects our experiences and perspectives, we can challenge the dominant narratives that have historically excluded us from the mainstream. This can help promote representation and change the narrative about our communities, making us more visible and empowering us to shape our own destinies.

In short, archives and art are powerful tools for promoting representation and challenging dominant narratives. At alt_, we are committed to using both to create a more just and equitable society for all. By preserving and sharing our stories, and by creating art that reflects our communities, we can inspire others, promote representation, and change the world.
